I Dublins gater forelsker en navnløs mann seg i en navnløs kvinne. Han reparerer støvsugere og opptrer på gaten, hun selger blomster og magasiner. Once (2007) er en sjarmerende film som vakte internasjonal oppmerksomhet, til tross for at den ble laget med et svært beskjedent budsjett. Filmen står som et vitnesbyrd om hva som er mulig utenfor de store filmproduksjonene, gitt en god nok idé. Utendørsscenene ble filmet uten tillatelser, mens innendørsscenene ble spilt inn i skuespillernes egne hjem. Et enkelt HVR-videokamera ble brukt som hovedkamera gjennom hele filmen, og begge skuespillerne var amatører. Alt dette bidrar til en film som oppleves som usedvanlig «ekte» og menneskelig, noe som trolig forsterkes av at skuespillerne også forelsket seg under innspillingen.

Filmens mest fremtredende kvalitet er imidlertid det fremragende musikksporet. Musikken brukes både diegetisk (spilt og hørt av karakterene) og ikke-diegetisk (kun hørt av publikum). Dette gjør filmen til en sterk lytteopplevelse, samtidig som musikken fungerer som et sentralt fortellergrep i skildringen av to musikere i møte med en kald ytre verden. Filmens hovedlåt, «Falling Slowly», vant Oscar for beste originale sang i 2008, og gjorde Markéta Irglová til den yngste Oscar-vinneren noensinne i en kategori utenfor skuespillerprisene.

In the streets of Dublin, an unnamed guy falls in love with an unnamed girl. One fixes vacuum cleaners and does street performance, the other sells flowers and magazines. Once (2007) is a charming film that captured international attention despite being shot on a shoestring budget. The film stands as a testament to what is possible outside of big movie productions with a good enough idea. Exterior scenes were shot without permits, while the interiors were that of the actors’ own house. A simple HVR Camcorder was used as the main camera throughout the whole film, and the actors were both non-professionals. All of this combines for a movie that feels uniquely “real” and human, which is likely exhilarated by the fact that the actors actually fell in love during the production as well.

However the film's standout feature is likely its fantastic score. The music is used both diegetically (played and heard by the characters) and non-diegetically (heard only by the audience). This not only makes for a strong listening experience in its own right, but also serves a key storytelling purpose in portraying two struggling musicians facing the challenges of a cold external world. The films main track “Falling slowly” in fact won the academy award for best Original Song in 2008, making Markéta Irglová the youngest ever winner in a non-acting category.
