I fjor kom Gutten og hegren av Hayao Miyazaki på kino. Den ble først promotert som filmskaperens siste film, men det ser ut til at han vil fortsette litt lenger. Dette er likevel grunn til refleksjon over en innholdsrik karriere. Nausicaä er Miyazakis andre spillefilm, og til tross for at den ble laget før stiftelsen av Studio Ghibli, regnes den ofte som deres første film. Nå, 40 år etter, fremstår tematikken om økokrise enda mer relevant og preker.

War and destruction have wreaked havoc on the world in Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. Almost all lay in desolate ruins, except a small seaside kingdom: the Valley of the Wind. As a mysterious and malevolent jungle ceaselessly expands, bringing with it poisonous foliage and dangerous insects, the Princess Nausicaä leads her people in a fight to defend the last remnants of human civilization.

In 2023 Hayao Miyazaki released The Boy and the Heron, initially promoted as his retirement film. This is a familiar tune from the legendary director, and it has already been confirmed that he might not retire yet. It nonetheless feels apropos to look back at his career, all the way back to his second feature film. While it was made before the formation of Studio Ghibli, Nausicaä is regularly counted as their first release. Now, exactly 40 years later, its world of environmental destruction and decay seem all the more relevant and dire. While we look back at a fantastic career at the end of the semester, let's also hope there is a future ahead of us.
