Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie is a film about its own existence. Matt Johnson and Jay McCarrol play exaggerated versions of themselves, returning to a web series they began in 2008.

Their goal is still to play a show at the Rivoli in Toronto. Rather than simply asking the venue, they devise an elaborate plan that sends them back to 2008. Footage from the original series blends with new scenes, letting Matt and Jay encounter their younger selves.

The film borrows freely from Back to the Future and plays with the boundaries between documentary, fiction and performance. Beneath the jokes and formal tricks lies a story about a long friendship, and what happens when two people try to pick up where they left off.
